  • Most importantly don’t get hit – use appropriate evasive maneuvers
  • Alternatives to evasive maneuvers- Use appropriate blocking techniques
  • Lack of blocking skills or evasive maneuvers  were involved in 99% of total concussions
  • Important preventive measures include using an appropriately fitted mouth guard and appropriate protective equipment
  • Important pre-competition habits
    • Appropriate conditioning and stretching
    • Appropriate punching and kicking techniques
  • Common injuries include:
    • Contusions and lacerations
    • Sprains – ankle or knee
    • Fractures – especially small bones
