The New Year is here and for some it arrives with resolutions to get healthy or improve on last year’s achievements. At Resurgens Orthopaedics, we think that’s great! Whether it’s a resolution to eat healthier or get in better shape, setting a goal to improve your health and wellness is always a good idea. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to stick to those goals as the year drags on; by the time February 2017 rolls around, many will have already given up on their goals. We want you to be successful so here are a few tips to help you prepare and accomplish your 2017 goals!
Set Realistic Fitness Goals
- Consult with your doctor before beginning any new fitness regime or diet.
Together you can set an attainable goal that makes sense for your age and overall health. It’s great to set your sights high, but if you’re aiming for a target that’s out of your reach, it may make it hard to attain. When working towards a goal that’s achievable for you, you’re less likely to get discouraged and give up.
Dedicate to Getting Fit
- Commit to your fitness plan.
Being thoughtful about achieving your desired goal helps you keep from wavering if you don’t see immediate results. Changing habits is not easy for anyone, but by sticking to the plan, you’ll see results.
Set Measurable Fitness Goals
- Be specific in setting your fitness goals.
Instead of resolving to “lose weight,” determine to lose a certain number of pounds, get into a specific clothing size, or lower your body fat percentage a few certain amount of percentage points. When you set vague goals, it’s harder to monitor your progress, making it easier to become discouraged. A measurable goal gives you a specific target to work towards that, when reached, creates a moment to celebrate! Then you can set the next attainable goal!
Stay on Track
- Don’t fall into temptations
As time goes on, you may find yourself looking for reasons to skip a day at the gym, or to binge on junk food. If you want to get to your goal, it’s important to stay on track. Once again, working with your doctor to monitor your progress can help you stay on track, so don’t forget to take advantage of that resource.
We hope these tips are helpful as you make your New Year’s Resolutions for 2017.
