According to the Centers for Disease Control, childhood obesity rates have doubled in the past 30 years and they show no signs of slowing down. That’s why it’s so important for kids to stay active, even when the weather isn’t so nice. This fall, the physicians at Resurgens Orthopaedics would like to encourage you to help your kids stay active. Here are a few fun activities you can do to get some exercise as the temperatures begin to drop:
Join a Family Fitness Program
Your local rec center can be a great ally in the fight to keep your kids active. Many even offer fitness programs designed to help families stay fit together! These are a great option to keep you and your kids in shape.
Video Games
It may sound crazy, but video games can be a fun way to exercise indoors. Games that involve moving around are getting more and more popular all the time, so consider trying out some virtual tennis, dancing, or bowling with your kids this fall. Fun exercise or dancing DVDs are another good virtual option.
Nature Scavenger Hunts
Scavenger hunts are another great way to keep your kids active. The best part is you can set it up in the house or out in the yard depending on the weather. Use fall items such as different colored leaves, small pumpkins, apples and acorns and hide them for the kids to find. Provide a checklist of the items and your kids are off to have fun!
When the weather’s nice, it’s easy to get kids to play outside. Unfortunately, they may be less enthusiastic about exercising in the fall. We’ve provided a few suggestions here, but don’t be afraid to get creative with your outdoor chores such as raking the leaves. During your fall activities, if you or a member of your family suffer an injury such as a sprained muscle or broken bone, call or schedule an online appointment with one of the physicians at Resurgens Orthopaedics. They will help develop a treatment plan to get you or your family member back in action! If you have a favorite fall activity, visit our Facebook page and share your ideas with us! Here’s to fun fitness this fall!!
