If you suffer from back pain, a proper exercise routine can help alleviate some of those problems.  Even if you’re not experiencing any pain, performing certain exercises can be like a preventative maintenance program for your spine.  Stretches are a great way to maintain proper spinal alignment and ensure your back is loose and ready for physical activities.  Here are 5 stretches you can do every day to maintain your spinal health:

Back Flexion Exercise

While lying on your back, pull both your knees up to your chest and push your head forward until you feel a gentle stretch.  This will stretch both your lower back and your neck.

Knee to Chest Stretch

Once again, lay on your back but this time, put both your heels on the floor, bending at the knees.  Next, take both hands and put them behind one of your knees, bringing it up to your chest.  Repeat with the other leg.

Chin to Chest Stretch

In a sitting or standing position, gently tilt your head forward until your chin touches your chest.  This is a great stretch for anyone who works at a computer, as it can be performed throughout the day to alleviate neck strain.

Ear to Shoulder Stretch

Just like the Chin to Chest Stretch, this is one you can do while sitting at a desk or workstation.  Simply bend your neck to the side like you were trying to touch your ear to your shoulder.  Just make sure not to stretch to far, stop when you feel a gentle stretching.

Hip Stretch

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, then take a half-step back with your right foot.  Next, bend your left knee and shift your weight to your right hip.  Keep your right leg straight and reach down your right leg until you feel a gentle stretch in your outer hip.

Of course it’s a good idea to consult a physician before beginning any exercise program.  The team of physicians at Resurgens Spine Center can consult with you and recommend some great exercises that will help you maintain a healthy spine.
