Calcific Tendinitis of the Shoulder (Degenerative Calcification)

This painful shoulder condition occurs when calcium deposits form in tendons of the rotator cuff. These tendons and surrounding tissues in the shoulder become inflamed. This condition typically affects adults. When calcium deposits contribute to impingement and restrict movement, shoulder impingement surgery may be recommended. A related condition, reactive calcific tendinitis, involves a more acute inflammatory response as the body attempts to reabsorb the calcium deposits.
