Navicular Stress Fracture

This foot and ankle condition is an injury to the navicular, one of the tarsal bones of the midfoot. This type of injury is common in athletes, particularly those who participate in high-impact sports that require jumping, sprinting and sudden directional changes. Track and field athletes are particularly susceptible. A navicular stress fracture is one of several types of stress fractures of the foot and ankle and may also be associated with Jones fractures or metatarsalgia.

Treatment for a navicular stress fracture depends on the severity of the injury. Many patients respond to non-surgical treatment options such as rest, immobilization in a cast or boot and a period of non-weightbearing to allow the bone to heal. If the fracture does not heal or involves a displaced or complete break, your Resurgens physician may recommend surgery to stabilize the bone.
