Fracture of the Heel Bone (Calcaneus)

What is a Fracture of the Heel Bone (Calcaneus)?

Fracture of the Heel Bone (Calcaneus) Definition

This foot and ankle condition is a break in the heel bone, called the calcaneus, which forms the back of the foot. This bone supports the foot and is important for normal walking. The fracture or break occurs as a result of an injury or overuse.

Fracture of the Heel Bone (Calcaneus) Symptoms and Anatomy

Most common symptoms are pain and swelling in the bottom or back of the heel. The skin can be bruised and/or cut in more serious injuries.

Heel pain can also be caused by other conditions. Plantar fasciitis produces pain at the bottom of the heel, plantar warts can cause discomfort on the sole of the foot, and sesamoiditis affects the small bones beneath the big toe joint.

Fracture of the Heel Bone (Calcaneus) Treatment Options

Treatment is based upon the severity of the injury. Resurgens Orthopaedics offers non-surgical treatment options such as splints, casts, and braces for fractures that are well aligned. Surgery may be required with more serious injuries.

Fracture of the Heel Bone (Calcaneus) Surgery

Surgery if required involves the surgeon inserting pins, screws and plates to stabilize the break/fracture. Surgical options may include a medial calcaneal sliding osteotomy or a calcaneal sliding osteotomy with lateral plate to realign and stabilize the heel bone.
