Ricardo Hernandez, DO

Philosophy of Care

"My approach to spine care is rooted in the belief that a patient is far more than their imaging findings. I take time to understand not just the anatomical source of someone's pain, but also the broader context of their life: their work, their mental health, their goals and their concerns."

About

Dr. Ricardo Hernandez is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon specializing in the treatment of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine conditions. He completed advanced spine surgery fellowship training at Twin Cities Spine Center following his orthopedic surgery residency at Beaumont Health Hospital, where he gained extensive experience in both open and minimally invasive spine procedures.

Dr. Hernandez believes the best outcomes begin with listening. He and his team understand that a patient's visit often comes after months or years of pain and frustration, and they are committed to making sure every patient feels heard from the first phone call through the last follow-up. Patients can expect consistent access to his team throughout care — in the office, on the phone and at every step of recovery — along with a commitment to staying up to date with evidence-based techniques so each treatment plan reflects the most thoughtful care available.

Although his surgical training has taken him across the country, Georgia has been home since he was seven years old, and joining Resurgens Orthopaedics feels like a genuine homecoming. Dr. Hernandez is deeply committed to this community and to being a physician patients can trust for the long term. As a bilingual, Spanish-speaking surgeon, he is also proud to serve Atlanta's Hispanic community — believing that navigating a spine condition is stressful enough without a language barrier, and that every patient deserves to feel fully informed and comfortable in their own language.

Outside of Work

Outside of the office, Dr. Ricardo Hernandez enjoys spending time with his wife and young daughter, who are at the center of his life. His faith plays an important role in both his personal life and his approach to patient care. He also enjoys cooking traditional Puerto Rican dishes, staying active through fitness, reading and pursuing creative and intellectually engaging projects in his free time.

Experience in Orthopedic Surgery

Dr. Hernandez specializes in the full spectrum of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine surgery. His areas of focus include lumbar decompression and fusion techniques (including TLIF, ALIF and lateral access procedures) for conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis, as well as cervical spine surgery including ACDF, cervical disc replacement, posterior cervical foraminotomy, laminoplasty and posterior cervical laminectomy and fusion. He also performs minimally invasive surgery to help reduce recovery time and surgical impact on the body, and has particular expertise in revision spine surgery for patients whose prior procedures did not fully resolve their symptoms or whose symptoms returned after a period of improvement.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hernandez has adapted alongside the rapid evolution of spine surgery. He has incorporated minimally invasive lateral and anterior access approaches into his practice. He also utilizes advances in surgical navigation, intraoperative imaging, and robotic-assisted platforms to improve implant accuracy and patient safety. In addition, he relies on intraoperative neuromonitoring to track spinal cord and nerve function in real time, allowing him to respond immediately during complex procedures.

Dr. Hernandez also emphasizes whole-person patient care. Research has shown that factors such as mental health, medication use and social support can meaningfully influence surgical outcomes — sometimes as much as imaging findings alone. Because of this, he prioritizes individualized patient selection and encourages patients to focus on overall health and preparation ahead of surgery, an approach that reflects his broader philosophy of care.
