Ricardo Hernandez, DO
Philosophy of Care
"My approach to spine care is rooted in the belief that a patient is far more than their imaging findings. I take time to understand not just the anatomical source of someone's pain, but also the broader context of their life: their work, their mental health, their goals and their concerns."
Specialties
Expertise Overview
Dr. Ricardo Hernandez specializes in the surgical treatment of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine conditions using both open and minimally invasive techniques. His expertise includes lumbar decompression and fusion procedures (TLIF, ALIF, and LLIF), cervical spine surgery such as ACDF, cervical disc replacement, laminoplasty and posterior cervical procedures, as well as complex revision spine surgery for patients whose previous operations did not provide lasting relief. He tailors each treatment plan to the individual, with a focus on relieving pain, restoring function and helping patients return to their daily lives.

Experience in Orthopedic Surgery
Dr. Hernandez specializes in the full spectrum of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine surgery. His areas of focus include lumbar decompression and fusion techniques (including TLIF, ALIF and lateral access procedures) for conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis, as well as cervical spine surgery including ACDF, cervical disc replacement, posterior cervical foraminotomy, laminoplasty and posterior cervical laminectomy and fusion. He also performs minimally invasive surgery to help reduce recovery time and surgical impact on the body, and has particular expertise in revision spine surgery for patients whose prior procedures did not fully resolve their symptoms or whose symptoms returned after a period of improvement.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hernandez has adapted alongside the rapid evolution of spine surgery. He has incorporated minimally invasive lateral and anterior access approaches into his practice. He also utilizes advances in surgical navigation, intraoperative imaging, and robotic-assisted platforms to improve implant accuracy and patient safety. In addition, he relies on intraoperative neuromonitoring to track spinal cord and nerve function in real time, allowing him to respond immediately during complex procedures.
Dr. Hernandez also emphasizes whole-person patient care. Research has shown that factors such as mental health, medication use and social support can meaningfully influence surgical outcomes — sometimes as much as imaging findings alone. Because of this, he prioritizes individualized patient selection and encourages patients to focus on overall health and preparation ahead of surgery, an approach that reflects his broader philosophy of care.
