Dr. R. Gil Thompson specializes in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of conditions affecting the upper extremity, from the shoulder to the hand. His expertise includes minimally invasive shoulder arthroscopy for rotator cuff tears, shoulder replacement (arthroplasty), upper extremity trauma, peripheral nerve compression and complex nerve injuries. When appropriate, Dr. Thompson also offers Wide-Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) techniques, allowing select procedures to be performed using local anesthesia without sedation, helping patients recover more comfortably and efficiently.

Dr. R. Gil Thompson is committed to providing expert, compassionate orthopedic care that helps patients regain function and return to the activities that matter most. He believes in listening closely to each patient's concerns, explaining treatment options clearly and working together to develop a care plan that fits their individual goals, whether treatment involves non-operative care or surgery.

Following his orthopedic surgery residency, Dr. Thompson served on active duty in the United States Navy as a medical officer at Naval Hospital Pensacola, where he cared for active-duty service members, military retirees and their families. His military experience strengthened his commitment to helping patients regain function and independence, whether returning to military duty, work, sports or everyday life.

Today at Resurgens Orthopaedics, Dr. Thompson and his team are dedicated to making patients feel heard, informed and supported throughout their care. His goal is to help each patient understand their options and take the next step toward getting back to what matters most.

Outside of Work 

Outside of the office, Dr. R. Gil Thompson enjoys spending quality time with his wife and their two daughters. As a family, they enjoy attending sporting events, exploring the outdoors through hiking and traveling together. In his free time, Dr. Thompson also enjoys golfing and taking advantage of opportunities to be active outside.

Experience in Orthopedic Surgery

Dr. R. Gil Thompson has extensive training and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of hand and upper extremity conditions with expertise spanning the shoulder through the hand. He completed a five-year orthopedic surgery residency followed by advanced fellowship training in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery.

Dr. Thompson's surgical expertise includes shoulder arthroscopy for rotator cuff tears, shoulder replacement, upper extremity trauma and peripheral nerve compression and injuries. He also offers wide-awake local anesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT) techniques when appropriate.

He stays current with advances in minimally invasive surgery, tendon and ligament repair and rehabilitation. For appropriately selected patients, he recommends techniques such as wrist arthroscopy that can offer smaller incisions, less postoperative pain and a quicker recovery. He also utilizes evolving approaches to thumb arthritis and traumatic nerve injuries including reconstructive procedures, nerve transfers, targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) and regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces (RPNI).
