The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has Reclassified Hydrocodone Combination Medications

Monday, September 29, 2014

“The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has reclassified  hydrocodone combination products (Norco, Vicodin, Lortab) as Schedule II controlled substances. After 6 October, the law mandates the following changes:

  1. All prescriptions for these pain relievers cannot be telephoned into the pharmacy and can only be prescribed by written prescriptions. This means that you will have to pick up a written prescription or have one mailed to you.
  2. These prescriptions cannot be written with refills.
  3. Physicians Assistants and Nurse Practitioners cannot prescribe this or any other Schedule II medication.

The DEA also changes tramadol (Ultram) from the noncontrolled class of drugs to a Schedule IV medication.

Please discuss any questions that you have regarding these medications with your physician.
