“The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has reclassified hydrocodone combination products (Norco, Vicodin, Lortab) as Schedule II controlled substances. After 6 October, the law mandates the following changes:
- All prescriptions for these pain relievers cannot be telephoned into the pharmacy and can only be prescribed by written prescriptions. This means that you will have to pick up a written prescription or have one mailed to you.
- These prescriptions cannot be written with refills.
- Physicians Assistants and Nurse Practitioners cannot prescribe this or any other Schedule II medication.
The DEA also changes tramadol (Ultram) from the noncontrolled class of drugs to a Schedule IV medication.
Please discuss any questions that you have regarding these medications with your physician.
