Hand & Wrist Procedures

Hand and wrist problems can affect anyone, young or old, and they can significantly impact your function and quality of life. These complex and unique parts of your body provide you with the ability to generate great force for activities like rock climbing. They also give you the fine dexterity needed to play a musical instrument, making them an amazing balance of power and finesse. The physicians at Resurgens Orthopaedics are experts in the complexities of hand and wrist anatomy as well as microvascular surgery. This allows us to diagnose and treat the small bones and delicate nerves, vessels, and tendons that could be the cause of your hand or wrist condition

Depending on your diagnosis, the prescribed treatment may include surgical or non-surgical options. Follow the links below to view additional information and educational videos that describe the various procedures performed by Resurgens Orthopaedics' hand and wrist doctors.

Common Types of Hand Procedures

Digital Nerve Repair

Digital Nerve Repair is a microsurgical procedure used to reconnect the severed ends of a nerve in the hand. This hand procedure allows the nerve to heal and reduces the possibility that a neuroma will form.

Joint Synovectomy

Joint Synovectomyis a procedure where diseased or damaged synovium (a thin layer of tissue that lines joint capsules and tendon sheaths and provides lubrication for movement) is removed.

Common Types of Finger Procedures

Artificial Joint Replacement

Artificial Joint Replacementis a procedure performed under regional or local anesthesia, where doctors replace a diseased or damaged PIP or MCP joint with an implant made of silicone rubber, hard metal, ceramic, or pyrocarbon.

Basal Joint Surgery

Basal Joint Surgeryis a surgical procedure that removes and rebuilds the basal joint, giving patients the ability to grip and hold or twist objects between the thumb and finger again.

De Quervain's Release

De Quervain's Releaseis an outpatient procedure that relieves the pressure and friction caused by De Quervain's tenosynovitis by releasing the tendon sheath that encases the tendons at the base of the thumb, allowing them to glide freely.

Digital Mucous Cyst Excision

Digital Mucous Cyst Excision is an outpatient procedure used to remove a small, fluid-filled sac, otherwise called a mucous cyst, that forms on the back of the finger near the base of the fingernail.

Finger Fracture Fixation

Finger Fracture Fixationis a procedure where pins, screws, or metal plates are used to repair broken bones in the fingers. The actual fixation method will depend on the location and pattern of the break.

Finger Joint Fusion

Finger Joint Fusion (DIP Joint) is an outpatient procedure used to resolve the pain of a severely arthritic finger joint by permanently stopping finger movement. This procedure is most commonly used for the joint nearest the fingertip, called the DIP joint, although any joint in the finger can be fused.

Limited Palmer Fasciectomy for Dupuytren's Contracture

Limited Palmar Fasciectomy for Dupuytren's Contracture is a surgical procedure where the thickened and contracted part of the fascia - the layer of tissue just beneath the skin - is removed. There are many variations of this surgery based on the severity of the condition.

Needle Aponeurotomy for Dupuytren's Contracture

Needle Aponeurotomy for Dupuytren's Contracture is a minimally invasive, non-surgical office procedure where a small needle is used to cut the contracted cords that are preventing the finger from fully extending as a result of Dupuytren's contracture.

Tendon Repair

Tendon Repair is a procedure performed under general anesthesia that is used to repair a ruptured or severed tendon in the finger or thumb.

Trigger Digit Release

Trigger Digit Release is a minimally invasive procedure where the surgeon opens a narrowed tendon pulley at the base of a finger or thumb affected by trigger digit. Doing this helps prevent the nodule from catching, allowing the affected digit to flex and extend normally with no triggering or pain.

Common Types of Wrist Procedures

Distal Radius Fracture Repair

Distal Radius Fracture Repair with Volar Plate is a procedure that uses a metal implant to stabilize a fracture in the radius - the larger of the two bones in the forearm - near the wrist.

Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release

Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release is a procedure that relieves pressure on the median nerve, alleviating the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome and restoring normal sensation to the hand and fingers. Performing this procedure endoscopically creates less pain and scarring than traditional open surgery and allows for a quicker recovery.

Ganglion Cyst Removal

Ganglion Cyst Removal is an outpatient procedure used to remove a fluid-filled sac that forms as a herniation from a joint capsule, ligament, or tendon sheath, otherwise called a ganglion cyst.

Scaphoid Fracture (ORIF)

Scaphoid Fracture Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) is a procedure that stabilizes a fractured scaphoid bone - an important carpal bone in the wrist - with screw fixation.

Wrist Arthroscopy

Wrist Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that allows the surgeon to evaluate and treat injuries and disorders of the ligaments, cartilage, and bones of the wrist.

Wrist Fusion (Total Wrist Arthrodesis)

Wrist Fusion (Total Wrist Arthrodesis) is a surgical procedure used to relieve pain and correct deformities of the wrist caused by injury, trauma, arthritis, or genetic defect.

Not all hand and wrist conditions require surgical procedures

While many types of hand and wrist conditions require surgical solutions, other treatment options are available for less severe issues. These non-surgical treatment options may include bracing or casting, physical therapy, and other outpatient treatment methods.
