Anti-Gravity Treadmill has Athlete Running Again

Ronda Robinson was an avid runner for most of her life often running 10 miles with ease, but when she was in her early 40s she was diagnosed with arthritis in her knees. The pain became so debilitating that eventually she wasn’t able to run at all anymore. She could no longer do what the loved and she found the standard rehabilitation techniques to be boring.

After consulting with Dr. Thomas Dopson at Resurgens Orthopaedics, he diagnosed osteoarthritis of the knee - an almost bone-on-bone condition.  Dr. Dopson recommended physical therapy and running on a new state-of-the-art machine called the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill.

The AlterG Treadmill is the world’s first and only treadmill using NASA based anti-gravity technology, and it is designed to help patients in their short-term rehabilitation programs. AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmills allow a patient to lessen their body weight to reduce the impact on their joints which enables faster rehabilitation, safer conditioning, and weight loss – all factors which can reduce major obstacles associated with recovery and rehabilitation.  These machines are contributing to better patient outcomes and Resurgens Orthopaedics offers them at our St. Josephs and Lawrenceville locations as part of our rehab programs.

Ronda gleefully says: “I feel like I got my life back! I get to run on the treadmill which is just a joy. I did a 5k on the treadmill and it feels so good to run again.  Can you imagine not doing something you loved for years and then being reintroduced to it? I was remembering what my body used to be able to do. My knees and legs feel great again.  The positive physical effects from the treadmill are felt for days!”

She continued to say, “As great as it felt physically, it also felt amazing mentally!” Being able to run again, even just on the special treadmill, has improved Ronda’s outlook. She feels like she’s 30 years old and running 10 miles once again.  Before seeing Dr. Dopson, Ronda was told to stop running because of her arthritis. Instead, Resurgens has allowed her to reclaim the activity she loved the most and it now reminds her of the type of athlete she used to be.

Ronda has advice for those suffering from arthritis; “Listen to your intuition. Find a way to do what you love. I used to be passionate about running and the treadmill allows me to remember what that was like. Focus on what you can do instead of what you can’t!”
