Physicians Helped Provide Free Foot Screenings and Footwear at Downtown Atlanta's Central Night Shelter During Fourth Annual Our Hearts to Your Soles Event
Resurgens Orthopaedics physicians Drs. Kali Arnold and Gary Stewart recently provided free screenings and fittings as part of "Our Hearts to Your Soles," a national movement in its fourth year that provides free foot screenings and footwear to the homeless. Nearly 70 homeless men were served.
"It was a pleasure to be part of this event and provide help to those in need," Dr. Stewart said. "It is common for this population to suffer health issues from wearing shoes that don't fit properly, and many lack access to the resources to help themselves."
"It was an honor to help this underserved group," Dr. Arnold said. "Our goal through the efforts of ‘Our Hearts to Your Soles' is to get them back on track to good health."
The event took place Monday, November 23 at downtown Atlanta's Central Night Shelter. Atlanta is one of 42 cities that participated this year.
"We really appreciate medical professionals like Dr. Stewart who volunteer their services," said Katie Bashor, Director of the Central Night Shelter. "Their contributions allow us to expand our services to offer medical support to Atlanta's homeless men."
"Our Hearts to Your Soles" partners with Nashville-based "Soles4Souls," the international shoe charity dedicated to providing free footwear to people in need.
More than 8,000 homeless in the 42 participating cities are expected to receive new shoes, socks, and foot screenings in 2009. Red Wing Shoes is supplying shoes for all 8,000 men.
"We are so thankful to Drs. Stewart and Arnold, and Central Night Shelter for reaching out to provide a vital service that helps make an immediate impact on people in a great time of need," said Wayne Elsey, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. "A pair of durable boots can fill a person with hope and confidence. It's a major step towards employment and building self-esteem."
