Dr. Howard A. McMahan Honored at Graduation Dinner For His Work With the Residency Program
Residents at Atlanta Medical Center’s Orthopaedic Residency Program selected Dr. Howard A. McMahan of Resurgens Orthopaedics—Georgia’s largest orthopaedic practice—as “Teacher of the Year.”
Dr. McMahan, who practices at the Resurgens Midtown office, was honored this month at the graduation dinner for orthopaedic residents.
Resurgens co-president Dr. Kay Kirkpatrick said Dr. McMahan’s extensive experience makes him an excellent teacher. “In addition to his years in orthopaedic surgery with Resurgens, Dr. McMahan spent 35 years as an officer in the Air Force Reserve, where his leadership and communication skills led to his promotion to the rank of major general. We are proud that he is willing to share his knowledge and skills with medical residents.”
Dr. McMahan retired in 2009 from the Air Force Reserve where he spent 60-70 days a year wearing the uniform of a two-star general. At his retirement, he held the title of Mobilization Assistant to the Surgeon General of the Air Force. In that assignment, he worked with Air Force Reserve and active duty officers to ensure that the Air Force Reserve had the staff, training, and equipment necessary to support their active duty counterparts.
Dr. McMahan has also served as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Atlanta Medical Center and Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners. His areas of expertise include adult spine surgery, trauma surgery, general orthopaedic surgery, and sports medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
The native of Andrews, NC, earned his medical degree at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he entered the Air Force through the Health Professions Scholarship Program.
