TAG Helps High School Students Choose Careers, Provides Hands-On Experience

Students Participate in Internship for School Credit, Career Education

Resurgens Orthopaedics physician Dr. Russell Sabrin has been participating in the Talented and Gifted Internship Program (TAG) for the past 25 years. This unique internship program allows an excelling high school senior to explore career interests by shadowing an established professional for one semester.

Participating students observe surgeries, physicians in clinic, and other medical procedures.

“Working with the bright students who shadow me through the TAG program has been a very rewarding experience,” said Dr. Sabrin. “It's gratifying to know that the time some participants have spent here has helped them decide to pursue careers in the medical field. Passing on knowledge that will help shape the futures of aspiring physicians has been an honor.”

The TAG program was established in 1979 to provide gifted students in the 11th and 12th grades the unique opportunity to explore possible career interests by working closely with established professionals in the real world. It offers students internship opportunities in a wide variety of fields, including medical, engineering, journalism, graphic arts, business management, and other exciting fields.

Aditya Aphale, who participated in the TAG program with Dr. Sabrin last semester, will embark on his medical career as he begins studying biology in the Honors Program at the University of Georgia in August 2010. He graduated from Alpharetta High School in May 2010.

“I’m so thankful for my time in the TAG program with Dr. Sabrin,” said Aphale. “TAG has given me so many opportunities that I would not have had in the classroom. Seeing the behind-the-scenes workings of the medical world has inspired me to pursue my interest in the medical field further. Dr. Sabrin was terrific.”

Dr. Peter Goodnight, who is in the final weeks of his residency in anesthesiology in South Carolina, is a perfect example of how a former student’s experience with the TAG program has come full circle. Dr. Goodnight participated in the TAG program with Dr. Sabrin more than a decade ago, and nearly went into orthopaedics before settling on anesthesiology.

TAG affords students the opportunity to experience working in a profession before making educational or career commitment. This way, they are able to get an idea of what working in a field will actually be like before they begin.
